Five nuclear airspace restrictions lifted

The CAA has permanently removed the Prohibited/Restricted Area designations around five former nuclear facilities, freeing up more Class G. The change came into force on Monday 10 October and follows the decommissioning of the nuclear plants.

The five sites are:

  • Harwell, Oxfordshire (shown above, image courtesy of SkyDemon Light)
  • Bradwell, Essex
  • Chapelcross, Dumfrieshire
  • Trawsfynydd, Gwynedd, Wales
  • Winfrith, Dorset.

Steve Slater, CEO of the Light Aircraft Association (LAA) said, “Well done to John Brady of FASVIG and Rob Gratton at the CAA for getting this through. It apparently needed a lot of work with the nuclear regulator and changes to the ANO!

“Certainly, the removal of the Harwell restriction mitigates a well-known ‘pinch point’ for VFR traffic transiting north-south in South Oxfordshire,” continued Steve.

Oh great. A few weeks after my CPL training, where I had to divert around Harwell three times a week, the correct 60/120 way to satisfy my instructor 🙂
