American pilot Kirby Chambliss has been crowned as Red Bull Air Race World Series champion 2006 after a thrilling race in Perth.
Chambliss only managed a safe third in the race down under on Sunday, but that assured him of top spot for the season. The Perth race was won by Hungarian Peter Bessenyei, with Britain’s Paul Bonhomme in second.
“Winning the Red Bull Air Race World Series has become my crowning achievement”, said Chambliss. “There’s just no other series like it in aviation sport.”
As usual, the race drew huge crowds: an estimated 300,000 lined the banks of the Swan River in Perth.
