Welshpool airport to expand

There are plans to extend the runway at Welshpool and provide new hangarage space following Powys County Council’s decision to provide a grant towards the costs.

£350,000 of improvements to the airfield will be split three ways between Powys County Council, the Welsh Development Agency and BJ Aviation.

The improvements include extending the runway by nearly 200 metres and creating two new hangars for the maintenance and aircraft storage.

Objections to the plan included Susan Lawrence of the Belan Community Association writing to ‘register our objection to the use of public money for a scheme that has minimal support in the local community’.
The airport was developed from a grass airstrip in 1990, to act as a base for companies operating aircraft in the area.
