Vintage Aerobatic World Championship 2017

Vintage Aerobatic Championships

The inaugural Vintage Aerobatic World Championship held last August at Stauning Airport, Denmark are to be repeated in 2017 and developed further, according to the contest director, Søren Dolriis.

Two extra categories of aircraft are to be included in VAWC 2017 which will be staged from 11 to 13 August. They are: Classics (1955-1970) and Replicas (aircraft such as Bücker Jungman, Stampe with Lycoming engine, plans-built Fokker Dri-decker etc). The original Vintage class is for aircraft built before 1955.

“The Championship was exactly the great experience everyone hoped for and demonstrated what the vintage aircraft community is all about,” said Dolriis.

“The ambition of creating the ‘sweet-spot’ balance of social energy and atmosphere and competitive excitement and spirit was realised.

“Despite marginal weather, the participants braved it and came from all over Europe in their magnificent flying machines to show the judges, spectators and fellow pilots their skills in a good-natured competitive spirit.”

Winners of the 2016 VAWC:

  • Looping the Loop World Champion 2016: Claus Cordes, (Germany) FW Stieglitz (1932)
  • Dancing the Cloverleaf World Champion 2016: Jiri Havliger (Czech Republic) Zlin 126 (1954)
  • Rolling the circle World Champion 2016:  Hardy Vad (Denmark) Kramme & Zeuthen KZ VIII (1949)
  • Free Style Performance World Champion 2016: Jiri Havliger (Czech Republic) Zlin 126 (1954).

Also new for 2017’s event will be a ‘Teaching the Tricks’ flying/coaching day before the competition.

“Please pre-register now,” said Dolriis, “and spread the word about the event. Spouses and ground teams really made an important part of the atmosphere so please bring your ‘team’ to Stauning.”
