Vantage Engines get EASA approval

Superior Air Parts, manufacturer of the Vantage series of engines, has received EASA Type Certification for its 180 hp Vantage engine.

Superior is a division of Thielert – itself, of course, the manufacturer of the Centurion range of diesel engines.

The Superior O-360 and injected IO-360 engines are both included in the type certification. “Major airframe manufacturers can now consider using this outstanding engine on future aircraft with no concern about additional European certification requirements,” said Mike Caban, the company’s Director of Sales and Marketing.

The Vantage Engine, says the company’s website, is the first aircraft piston engine to be designed, built and certified in the United States in nearly 50 years. It is the first engine to be certified in the US which runs on unleaded automotive gasoline.

Superior has long been known as a manufacturer of replacement parts for Lycoming and Continental aircraft engines, but with the Vantage it is stepping out on its own as a manufacturer.
