Cessna’s NGP (New Generation Piston) proof of concept aeroplane continues to make progress according to Jack Pelton, Cessna’s CEO. Pelton told visitors to AOPA Expo that initial structural testing, handling throughout the flight envelope, aerodynamic performance, engine cooling and centre of gravity expansion had been completed.

The NGP is expected to be not one, but a family of new aeroplanes. At the lighter end of the market Cessna’s LSA airframe flew into Palm Springs from Wichita and attracted much attention in the static park. The company is expected to make a decision on the project in early 2007.

Cessna also announced that its Mustang VLJ has been awarded FIKI (Flight Into Known Icing) certification, and that the first customer delivery would take place this month.

Cessna has announced that it has produced its 7,000th aircraft from its Independence factory. The Independence, Kansas, plant was commissioned in 1996, when Cessna went back into producing light aircraft after the passing of the General Aviation Revitalisation Act in 1994. In all, Cessna has now manufactured over 150,000 in its all-but 80 year history.
