ICON amphibian makes first flight

The new ICON A5 amphibian aircraft has made its first flight, performing “as well as an initial test flight possibly could go,” according to test pilot Jon Karkow (who is also lead aero engineer).

The uniquely-shaped two-seater, which features a hull-based cockpit at the front, with high wings and a rear-mounted Rotax 912 ULS engine, attached to a large tailplane via a low boom, is designed as an S-LSA (Light Sport Aircraft). It is expected to have a maximum speed of 105kt and a range of 300nm.

The wings are foldable for easy transportation, and it also features retractable landing gear. Prices are expected to start at $139,000 with standard equipment.
