High winds cause flying chaos

Many of the UK’s airfields and airports have been suffering disruption today due to the extremely high winds which have swept over the country. There are reports of various airports being closed at various times during the day (Manchester, for instance) due to debris on the runway and other ‘situations’.

The BBC is now reporting that gusts of up to 100mph have been recorded.

We’ve had one report of an overturned aircraft at North Weald.

On a more sombre note we were saddened to hear of the death of Birmingham Airport’s managing director, Richard Heard. He was 49. He died while driving to work, when a tree brought down by the winds crashed through his windscreen.
