Glass cockpit displays look great but what when they go wrong?

Garmin are facing such a problem with the recall of the sophisticated CNX80 GPS navigator.

The firm is concerned that a potential transformer failure could blank the display screen and cause minor smoke in the cockpit.
There have been three known failures and the condition has been reproduced on the test bench.
