For Sale: Lancair's legacy aircraft business

Earlier this year US kitplane maker Lancair announced it was getting ready for sale all assets, parts, intellectual property and ongoing business of its ‘out of production’ aircraft. Now that job is done and a price announced: $695,000 (£558,000).

Now that seems a good deal for what Lancair calls “millions of dollars worth of inventory” and a business which generates a profit of $650,000 a year. But there’s a catch.

“Before you get too excited that we are willing to sell millions of dollars of inventory, intellectual development engineering of over 30 years, a profitable $650,000 per year business (2016), and direct access to over 2000 kits customers, I need to make sure you understand that the price is not our most important criteria,” said Kevin Eldredge, director of business development at Lancair.

“We are only willing to transfer this opportunity to a buyer who is willing to invest their time and resources into building on our 30+ years of work,” he continued.

“There are many opportunities included in the business and finding the right buyer that will care for our customers is our top priority.”

The sale has come about as Lancair concentrates on its current model, the Evolution, which is not included in the sale.

Eldredge continued, “We have spent months separating and organising all parts so new owners can easily verify all parts and prepare for moving. [There are] parts, molds, fixtures, layup schedules, and drawings for the 320, 360, Legacy, and all IV models. We are also willing to help the buyer through transition to continue sales and support until you are up and running.”
