The US DeltaHawk diesel engine project is said to be closer to certification of its 180hp DH180A4 engine.
Cessna’s 172 is expected to be the first aircraft for which DeltaHawk will develop an STC to allow a conversion from the standard Lycoming engine.
The DH180A4 is said to be smaller and lighter than the Lycoming, simpler with fewer parts, and have a much lower fuel burn – up to 40% more efficient says the company. No price has yet been announced for the engine.
At last July’s Oshkosh event, DeltaHawk announced numerous enhancements to the engine’s design, including a new cylinder head design for improved efficiency, simpler inspection and maintenance, a lower parts count, reduced engine weight and a redesigned exhaust system.
“This engine is designed by pilots, for pilots and purpose-built for aviation,” said Christopher Ruud, DeltaHawk CEO.
“The engine’s unique design features include redundancies in the air, cooling and fuel systems, and does not rely on the aircraft’s electrical system for operation.”
