Channel Islands confirm UK pilots with PMD can fly in

Channel Islands UK

Pilots flying with a Pilot Medical Declaration (PMD) are OK to fly to the UK Channel Islands, it has been confirmed.

Richard Hawkins of the Channel Islands branch of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), said, “The matter has been discussed with both Law Officers in the Bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey and I can confirm that the Office of the Director of Civil Aviation has no operational objection to flights of UK registered aircraft being conducted to, from and within the Channel Islands by holders of UK issued flight crew and pilot licenses and who have made UK CAA Pilot Medical Declarations (PMDs), subject to such flights being conducted in accordance with the privileges and any other conditions imposed by the UK CAA.”

The DCA also said,  “We will, over the course of the next few weeks, update the ‘Regulatory Framework Document’ to reflect our policy and provide guidance to operators. Inclusion of this statement in the Regulatory Framework Document will act as deemed permission in accordance with the CAA requirement noted in the PMD.”

AOPA added that it is highly likely that there will also be news on permit to fly exemptions over the next few weeks.

Sorry, but this has NOT yet been fully confirmed! I’ve literally just got off the phone to the UK CAA and they are still waiting to hear from DCA in the Channel Islands that the States legal officers are fully in agreement. Also, the legal situation regarding operation of Part 21 aircraft by NPPL / UK-issued LAPL and PMDs in the Brest FIR needs to be agreed as it is French airspace!

It’s not French airspace it’s just in Brest FIR.
Territory is the median line between the 12 nautical mile limits.
It’s not up to the French provided you don’t enter their territory.

Guernsey and Jersey are two different jurisdictions they each have their own DCA.
Which one are we talking about?
There used to be one DCA holder for both jurisdictions but they now are separate.
Ash Nicholas is the head of the Guernsey DCA.
Inez Bartolo is the Head of the Jersey DCA.
They share a website and an address.
        Complicated ?? Yes

Whether it has happened or is about to happen, it is still good news (and reminds me that I need to re-join AOPA).
