The CAA is consulting on the next revision of CAP632 Ex-Military Aircraft, the ‘bible’ for anyone operating a Permit-to-Fly ex-military aircraft on the UK register.

“While we absolutely appreciate that much of the UK’s aviation community is being severely affected by COVID-19, we do need to prepare for a safe return for aviation and develop future rules and regulations,” said the CAA.

“To meet that aim we are consulting on Edition 8 of CAP632 which is the comprehensive source of information containing rules and guidance pertaining to maintaining and operating permit-to-fly ex-military aircraft on the UK register.

“It is aligned with CAP403 Flying Displays and CAP1724 Display Standards Document and includes operational requirements that an applicant for the issue of a Permit-to-Fly for an ex-military aircraft is required to meet.”

Amendments/changes in this edition include:

  • General formatting and minor text amendments together with the inclusion of Terminology and Definitions.
  • Clarification on the general legal requirements for operating an ex-military aircraft under the requirements of this publication.
  • Further clarification on the airworthiness requirements for BCAR A8-23 or A8-24 and BCAR A8-25 continuing airworthiness arrangements including further alignment with BCAR A3-7.
  • Removal of the Safety Management guidance – further information regarding Safety Management can be found on www.caa.co.uk/sms
  • Introduction of requirements for aircraft technical logs (tech logs) for aircraft operated in accordance with this publication.
  • Further clarification for the requirements to conduct post maintenance flight tests or check flights.
  • Additional guidance for take-off and landing performance.
  • Clarification of audit cancellation policy for operators.
  • Introduction of a sample CAP 632 Continuing Airworthiness and Maintenance Contract.
  • Introduction of the requirements for commercial operation including fully remunerated flying training in CAP 632 aircraft.
  • References to Safety Standards Acknowledgement and Consent (SSAC) have been removed from this publication and incorporated into CAP 1395 Safety Standards Acknowledgement and Consent.

The consultation closes on 12 June 2020 and can be found here.
