Autogyro world record attempt abandoned

Warrant Officer Barry Jones attempt to fly an an autogyro around the world has been abandoned.

Expedition Global Eagle stalled in India after the heavy monsoons forced a re-appraisal of the record attempt.

The team say that Global Eagle would not be in a position to fly safely over Canada and Greenland, as the winter make the risks unacceptable in the open cockpit of an autogyro.

This combined with the requirement for the team to return to their regular military duties early in 2005, has forced a radical change of plan.

Barry Jones has been in the UK for several weeks and will resume his journey in late September.

The aim will now be to fly Global Eagle to Sydney, Australia, before returning to the UK by conventional means. If successful this will be the first flight of an autogyro from the United Kingdom to Australia.
