The Air League will open its 2019 flying scholarships in early November. There are approximately 100 scholarships and bursaries on offer to young members of the Air League as well as disabled veterans.

The scholarship programme:

  • Flying Scholarships – 12-hours of free flying for those yet gain a PPL/LAPL/NPPL
  • Gliding scholarships – for solo glider pilots
  • Engineering scholarships – 1-2 week industry placements
  • Flying Bursaries – open to those already holding a pilot’s licence as well as those embarking on their flying careers
  • Space Scholarships – opportunity to attend the Senior Space School at the University of Leicester and to be considered for an internship with SES Satellites.

The Air League’s scholarships season opens on 2 November 2018. Flying and gliding scholarships welcome applications from all Air League members until January 2019. Engineering Scholarships and Flying Bursaries will be launched in January 2019 and closing in March 2019. Space Scholarships will be open again in the Spring of 2019.

This year, some changes have been made to widen the eligibility criteria. Applications for 12 hour flying scholarships are now accepted from all members up to the age of 35, and those yet to hold a PPL can now apply for the flying bursaries.

Membership rates have also been reviewed with annual memberships for younger members starting at £24. Membership of the Air League not only provides access to our scholarships and bursaries but also to Air League events, industry visits and other benefits.

Jordan Penning, one of this year’s flying scholarship winner said, “I’m currently now in the process of finishing my pilot’s licence and without the scholarship that would not have been a possibility.

“I have made so many great friends along the way, and it’s not just about the flying scholarship but the other events and activities the air league organises for air league members.”
