Overseas JAR examiners
Last modified: 31 August 2005

Overseas JAA Instructors

As announced in the April 2000 edition of FLYER magazine, we are launching a page on the Airportal which will contain details of UK JAR Flight Instructors overseas.

Why might you need to use this list? [jump straight to the list]

Quite simply, if you're a private pilot resident abroad, but flying single engine piston aircraft (or touring motor gliders) on the basis of a UK licence, you'll need to revalidate your SEP or TMG rating every two years. This could be done by a proficiency check with a JAR examiner in the final three months before expiry, but most pilots prefer to use the 'personal experience' route.

Part of the requirement for revalidation by personal flying experience is a flight of at least an hour with an instructor in the final year of the rating. The trouble is that the CAA are insisting that this is interpreted as being an instructor from a JAA-aligned state. Many of the countries in which ex-pats find themselves aren't JAA-aligned. Even some European countries are surprisingly non-aligned (Germany, for instance, at the time of writing).

If you are in a JAA-aligned state, you can use a local instructor. Make sure the flight lasts at least an hour, log it as training, and get the instructor to countersign it with his or her reference number.

If you are in a non-aligned State, finding an instructor from a JAA-aligned state such as the UK might be difficult. Which is where this page comes in.

We'll be maintaining a list of JAA instructors who either live or regularly visit overseas so that you'll be able to consult this list and contact the most convenient instructor when you need one. We will also flag where the instructor is also an examiner, in case you would rather take the examiner proficiency check to revalidate. (This is your only option if you let your 2 year rating expire without meeting all the revalidation requirements.)

All the requirements (including the instructor flight) for revalidation by experience fall in the final year of the 2 year rating, and can be done in any order. When you have completed all your revalidation requirements, either the CAA or an examiner can sign off your SEP or TMG rating for another 2 years. Therefore, if the instructor you used for your flight is not ALSO an examiner authorised to sign off ratings (most are not), you will have to complete the paperwork by mail with the CAA.

If the instructor you used happens to be an authorised examiner too, he or she will be able to sign off your paperwork locally. All the UK instructors abroad, or organisations with UK instructors, that we know of are on this page. If they don't appear here, we simply don't know about them.

So if you're in Outer Monbuctoo and nobody's listed for that country here, don't contact us - but if you find an instructor, get him or her to contact us! Please also make sure of the latest regulations for such revalidation flights so that you can be secure in the knowledge that your licence is truly valid! On the other hand, if you're a UK instructor, please do contact us by filling out the form here, and we'll add your name to this list.

Blue skies and happy revalidations!
