Red Bull has announced that it is to have two events in London this year: its FlugTag and the second London Red Bull Air Race.
FlugTag is the first of the events. Although the name may be unfamiliar, the concept of FlugTag is not: you have to invent a man-powered flying machine; jump off the end of a pier; fly as far as possible over water; land in the water, preferably in a humourous fashion. Although it's about the taking part rather than the winning, "the winning team will be the one that not only flies the furthest, but also impresses the judges and crowd with their pre-flight performance and displays the best design and originality in their flying machine and team."
Flugtag will take place into the Serpentine in Hyde Park on 7 June. More details from the website at redbullflugtag.co.uk, including how to take part and how to enter the ballot for viewing tickets. The competition has not been held in the UK since 2003.
The other Red Bull event is the Red Bull Air Race. Last year's inaugural event in London was a roaring success, and Red Bull is planning something similar as part of this year's expanded Race series. "We're currently working with the relevant authorities and partners, as we did last year, to ensure they are completely happy with our plans and that we can stage the most impressive Air Race yet," says Red Bull. "Full details will be released as soon as they are confirmed."
This year's series will see at least one new location, in Sweden.
Other innovations are planned, including an overhaul of the points system and a new 'One Point Round', in which the four non-finalists will vie for a single championship point on race day. See www.redbullairrace.co.uk for more information.
