Two young and inexperienced pilots are hoping to depart from Lydd Airfield this weekend in an attempt to smash the world record for visiting as many countries as possible in 24
hours, using only a single-engine piston aircraft.
James Van Der Hoorn and Iain MacLeod are 22 years old and have both recently graduated from the University of Leeds with a BSc in Aviation Technology. They are members of the Yorkshire University Air Squadron, and both hold PPLs. However, neither have piloted an aircraft overseas before or for such a duration.
The duo plan to visit 14 countries, besides England, where they must land and take off in each. The route is as follows: (Starting in the UK), then: Netherlands - Belgium - Luxembourg - France - Germany - Switzerland - Austria - Italy - Slovenia - Croatia - Hungary - Slovakia - Czech Republic - Poland.
Iain and James are taking on attempt in order to raise over £5,000 for Help for Heroes, as for well as the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
